October 4 -- The Yearling

This film adaptation of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings' prize-winning novel takes an earnest look at the struggles of a poor couple (Gregory Peck, Jane Wyman) living in Florida's backwoods in the 1870s as they struggle to subsist as farmers. The story focuses on their young son Jody (Claude Jarman Jr.), who befriends a fawn. Nominated for 7 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, the movie actually won the Oscar for its gorgeous Technicolor cinematography.
